Head Lights Buying Guide
Head light parts here fall into three kinds, and the first decision is which you need: a complete replacement unit, a repair part for the factory unit, or a cover or conversion that changes the car's face.
Complete units
Aftermarket units from 78Works, VELENO and REIZ replace the factory lamp with new housings, often full LED with projector low beams and LED daytime or position lights. They are made for one chassis, such as 78Works' units for the R32 Skyline and S15 Silvia, and plug into the car's own wiring or come with a harness. Check whether the indicator and position lights work as on the original, and whether the unit is made for left or right-hand traffic.
Repair parts
A yellowed or crazed lens on an older car is often the only thing wrong with the lamp. Behrman's repair lens kits replace the outer lens of the factory headlight on cars such as the R33 GT-R, R34 Skyline and JZA80 Supra, keeping the original reflector and the factory look.
Covers and conversions
Light covers and eye lids change the shape of the lamp opening. Conversions go further: RE Amemiya's Sleek Light kit replaces the FD3S RX-7's pop-up headlights with fixed lamps behind clear covers, using H11 bulbs.
Beam pattern
Japanese cars drive on the left, and a Japanese-market low beam is shaped for it, lighting the kerb side and cutting off towards oncoming traffic. In a country that drives on the right, that pattern dazzles oncoming drivers, and the pattern is built into the lamp. Choose units made for your side of the road, and check your local rules for road use before fitting.
See HID, LED and bulbs for light sources, fog lamps for the bumper, and the whole lights range.
