About the Mazda RX-7 FD3S

The FD3S RX-7

The FD3S RX-7 went on sale in Japan in December 1991 and was built until August 2002, finishing with the Spirit R. Until October 1997 it wore Mazda's ɛ̃fini badge in Japan. Front mid-engined and rear-wheel drive, the FD has the engine set well back behind the front axle.

The engine is the 13B-REW, a 1,308 cc twin-rotor rotary with sequential twin turbochargers. Power rose over its life: 255 PS at launch, 265 PS from 1996, and 280 PS for the Type R and RS from 1999.

What FD owners upgrade

Heat governs an FD build. A rotary runs hot, and the turbo controls under the bonnet suffer for it, so intercooler kits and oil coolers are among the first upgrades, followed by exhaust systems and catalytic converters that flow more freely.

Standalone ECUs give full control of fuel and boost, and the ignition gets fresh coil packs and alternators. Pod filters on the intake, replacement head lights, floor mats and interior trim are the other regular buys.

Japan's rotary specialists, RE Amemiya, R Magic and Fujita Engineering, sit beside GReddy, HKS, APEXi and Cusco among the makers FD owners choose.

Genuine parts

The sequential turbo system is controlled by solenoids, actuators and several feet of vacuum and pressure hoses, which heat and age wear out. When the turbos come in erratically, check the solenoids and replace the rubber hoses before blaming the turbos. The coolant air-separator tank can split and leak.

Before buying or rebuilding, have a rotary specialist test the compression: the result shows how near the engine is to a rebuild. Short engines, gaskets, hoses and mounting rubbers are available as genuine Mazda OEM parts.

Wheels

The FD has five studs on a 114.3 mm PCD with M12 x 1.5 nuts, and came on 16x8 +50 wheels all round, or 17x8 +50 front and 17x8.5 +50 rear on the later sports grades. Larger sizes are listed under wheels that fit the FD3S.
