The A80 Supra

The A80 Supra went on sale in Japan on 24 May 1993, a three-door, rear-wheel-drive coupe, and stayed in production until July 2002, when it could not meet Japan's new emissions rules. Both engines are 2,997 cc straight-sixes. The RZ, and from 1995 the RZ-S, have the 2JZ-GTE, whose two turbos work in sequence, the second joining as revs rise: 280 PS at 5,600 rpm and 431 Nm at 3,600 rpm. The SZ and SZ-R have the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE with 225 PS. The RZ uses a six-speed manual developed with Getrag, with a limited-slip differential as standard, and a four-speed automatic was offered on the turbo cars.

In August 1997 the 2JZ-GTE gained VVT-i and an electronic throttle, lifting torque to 451 Nm. The targa-roofed Aerotop was offered on the turbo cars until April 1996, and sales ended in August 2002 after 31,372 had been registered in Japan.

What Supra owners upgrade

Supra owners spend most on brakes: pads, rotors and full upgrade kits from Endless and Project Mu. Next are LSD upgrade kits and clutches from the drivetrain range, with OS Giken and Tomei among the makers, then strut braces from the handling range, intercooler kits and oil pan baffles. HKS and TRD are among the other names owners choose.

Keeping an original car original matters more on the A80 than most. In January 2020 Toyota announced the GR Heritage Parts programme, remaking A80 parts that had gone out of production, starting with the headlamps, door handles and brake booster, and these sit in the heritage parts range. Replacement headlights from the lights range are a popular buy too.

Genuine parts

The sequential turbo system is what ages. Its vacuum lines turn brittle, the vacuum switching valves break down, the actuators stop holding pressure and the pressure tank stops storing it, and the usual sign is a second turbo that comes in late or not at all. Wheels

The A80 came on 16x8 +50 front and 16x9 +50 rear wheels, or 17x8 +50 front and 17x9.5 +50 rear, on a 5x114.3 bolt pattern with M12 x 1.5 nuts. Other sizes are listed under wheels that fit the A80 Supra.
