Toyota put the GR86 on sale in Japan on 28 October 2021, nine years after the first 86. Subaru builds it at its Gunma plant beside its twin, the BRZ, but Toyota tuned its own car for a different feel. The engine grew to the FA24, a 2.4-litre naturally aspirated flat-four with direct and port injection, making 235 PS at 7,000 rpm and 250 Nm at 3,700 rpm. It drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.
The body uses aluminium for the bonnet, roof and front wings, and is about 50 percent stiffer in torsion than before; cars weigh 1,260 to 1,290 kg. There are three grades: the RZ on 18-inch wheels, the SZ on 17s, and the RC, a manual-only base for building a car, on 16-inch steel wheels without cruise control.
GR86 owners spend most on brakes, from pads to complete upgrade kits, because the car is light, quick and built for circuit days. Adjustable arms and links from the handling range set the alignment once a car is lowered, strut braces stiffen the front, and LSD upgrade kits from OS Giken and Cusco in the drivetrain range help it put power down out of tight corners.
Outside, emblems and rear wings from the exterior range are popular; inside, steering wheels and shift knobs. An exhaust system gives the FA24 more voice, and mechanical gauges keep an eye on oil temperature and pressure. TRD, Blitz, Project Mu, Grazio, GReddy and APEXi are among the makers owners choose; TRD is Toyota's own tuning arm.
The GR86 has five studs on a 100 mm PCD with M12 x 1.25 nuts, like the 86 before it, but its factory wheels are wider: 16x6.5 +48 on the RC, 17x7.5 +48 and 18x7.5 +48. Larger sizes are listed under wheels that fit the GR86.
