The eighth-generation Mark II went on sale in September 1996 and was built until October 2000, when the X110 replaced it. That makes it the last Mark II four-door hardtop, and the shortest-lived of the JZX100 three: the Chaser and Cresta carried on into 2001. Its range splits between the comfort-minded Grande models and the sporting Tourer S and Tourer V. The Tourer V has the 2,491 cc 1JZ-GTE, now with VVT-i and a single turbo, making 280 PS at 6,200 rpm and 378 Nm from 2,400 rpm, so it pulls harder low down than the twin-turbo X90. A five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic drives the rear wheels; with the manual a Torsen limited-slip differential was standard, and xenon headlights came on every Tourer V.
The August 1998 facelift changed the grille, lamps and wheels and redid the Tourer's interior. Special editions included the 1998 TRENTE, for the Mark II's 30th anniversary, and the Grande Regalia of 1999.
Clutch kits from the drivetrain range, ORC's in particular, sell more than anything else for the Mark II. Behind them, the classic single-turbo recipe: a full exhaust system, a pod filter for the intake, a larger intercooler kit and engine electronics such as boost controllers. HKS, GReddy, Blitz and APEXi are among the names owners choose.
For the chassis, owners fit pads and rotors from the brakes range, mostly Project Mu, and arms, stabilisers and tie rod ends from the handling range from Cusco, D-Max and Tomei. Clear World tail lights and indicators are a common change to the rear.
The VVT-i pulley on the intake camshaft relies on an O-ring that hardens with age and starts to leak oil, and the leak grows. An unsteady idle usually points to a failing idle speed control valve. Grilles, lamps and wheels changed in August 1998, so check the build date first. All are in our genuine Toyota parts catalogue.
The JZX100 Mark II's factory sizes are 15x6 +50, 16x6.5 +50 and 16x7.5 +55, with M12 x 1.5 nuts; the Tourer V had 16-inch alloys as standard. More sizes are under wheels that fit the JZX100 Mark II.
