About the Nissan Fairlady Z - 350Z Z33

The Z33 Fairlady Z

The Z33 Fairlady Z went on sale in Japan in July 2002, sold abroad as the 350Z, and was built until 2008 as a coupe and a roadster. Rear-wheel drive, the Z came with a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic.

The engine is a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6. Early cars have the VQ35DE at 280 PS, raised to 294 PS for manual cars in 2005. In 2007 the VQ35HR replaced it at 313 PS: the HR revs to 7,500 rpm, and the bonnet was reshaped to clear its taller engine.

What Z33 owners upgrade

The VQ breathes well but has no boost, so owners who want a real step in power fit a supercharger kit, which bolts on without the plumbing of a turbo conversion. Freer exhaust systems and panel filters for the intake are the simpler start, and are what give the V6 its voice.

In the drivetrain, LSD upgrade kits and gear sets suit cars used on track or for drifting. Uprated brake pads, aero kits and rear wings, and seat rails for bucket seats are the other regular buys. Nismo, HKS, OS Giken, Cusco, Tomei, Bride and 326 Power are among the makers Z33 owners choose.

Genuine parts

On early gearboxes, worn synchros and baulking gear changes are the thing to test for, particularly on cars built before 2005. Window motors are a known failure on every year.

Interior trim is the other regular need: front pillar finishers, console finishers and cluster lids wear and crack with age. All of these are available as genuine Nissan OEM parts.

Wheels

The Fairlady Z has five studs on a 114.3 mm PCD with M12 x 1.25 nuts, and came on staggered wheels: 17x7.5 +30 front and 17x8 +33 rear, or 18x8 +30 front and 18x8.5 +33 rear. Other sizes are listed under wheels that fit the Z33.
