The JZX90 Chaser

The fifth-generation Chaser arrived in October 1992 and was sold until September 1996. It was longer and more rounded than the X80 it replaced, still a four-door hardtop, and every version was now wider than the Japanese compact-car limit. The sporty grades took the name Tourer in place of GT. The Tourer S has the naturally aspirated 1JZ-GE, and the Tourer V the 1JZ-GTE: a 2,491 cc straight-six with two CT12A turbos working in parallel, making 280 PS at 6,200 rpm and 363 Nm at 4,800 rpm. A five-speed manual, with a limited-slip differential as standard, or a four-speed automatic drives the rear wheels.

The Avante and Avante G were the luxury grades, and from October 1993 a four-wheel-drive Avante Four was added. The September 1994 facelift changed the grille, bumper and rear lamps.

What JZX90 Chaser owners upgrade

JZX90 Chaser owners most often start with engine electronics, and Bee R's rev limiters are a favourite. Next come clutch kits and clutch overhaul parts from the drivetrain range, where ORC is the name owners know, and replacement filters for the intake.

A chassis this old needs its suspension renewed, and drifting asks more of it: arms, stabilisers and tie rod ends from the handling range, with Ikeya Formula and D-Max among the makers. Pads and rotors from the brakes range are mostly Project Mu, and a baffled oil pan keeps the pickup covered through long slides. HKS, Cusco and Works Bell, for steering wheel boss kits, complete the list.

Genuine parts

The twin turbos are the first thing to check. Early 1JZ-GTEs used ceramic turbine wheels, which are prone to delaminating, and oil vapour wears the turbo seals, which shows as smoke. Grilles, bumpers and rear lamps changed in September 1994, so check the build date before ordering body parts from our genuine Toyota parts catalogue.

Wheels

The Tourer V came on 16-inch alloys as standard. The Chaser's factory sizes are 15x6 +50 and 16x6.5 +50, with M12 x 1.5 wheel nuts. Other sizes are listed under wheels that fit the JZX90 Chaser.
