The JZA70 Supra

The JZA70 is the last version of the A70 Supra, the three-door liftback Toyota had sold in Japan since February 1986. It arrived with the final update in August 1990, when the 2.5-litre 1JZ-GTE replaced the 3.0-litre 7M-GTEU and the car became the 2.5GT Twin Turbo. A70 production ended in April 1993, a month before the A80 took over.

The 1JZ-GTE is a 2,491 cc straight-six with two turbochargers working in parallel, rated at 280 PS and 363 Nm. It drives the rear wheels through an R154 five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, and it was the first 280 PS Toyota offered with a manual gearbox. The 2.5GT Twin Turbo R added Bilstein dampers, Recaro seats and a MOMO steering wheel, and is the lightest and quickest A70 of all.

What JZA70 owners upgrade

Engine electronics lead the list. In the drivetrain, clutch kits and clutch overhaul parts sell steadily, since the R154 lives or dies by how it has been treated. Toyota's GR Heritage Parts programme has been remaking discontinued A70 parts since 2020, and its heritage parts are a regular buy for owners restoring a car.

Replacement and pod filters for the intake, radiator caps for the cooling system, brake pads, strut braces and turbo timers make up most of the rest. Bee R, ORC, HKS, APEXi, OS Giken and Tomei are among the names JZA70 owners choose.

Genuine parts

The 1JZ-GTE is free of the head gasket trouble that dogs the 7M-GTE, but it has a cambelt, so the service history matters. Rust is the bigger threat on an A70: check the rear arches, sills, strut towers, the lower edge of the windscreen and the chassis rails, and look for water in the carpet around the rear hatch.
