The EG6 Civic SiR

Honda launched the fifth-generation Civic in Japan on 11 September 1991, and it soon became known there as the "Sports Civic". The EG6 is its three-door hatchback SiR, built until 1995. Under the bonnet is the B16A, a 1,595 cc DOHC VTEC four rated at 170 PS at 7,800 rpm and 157 Nm at 7,300 rpm, driving the front wheels through a five-speed manual. Every EG Civic has double wishbone suspension at all four corners, and the SiR weighs about 1,040 kg.

There were two grades. The SiR was the lighter, simpler car; the SiR II added equipment and could be had with an automatic, rated at 155 PS, and a viscous limited-slip differential was a factory option on it. The four-door Ferio SiR has the same engine under its own code, EG9.

What EG6 owners upgrade

EG6 owners spend first on stopping and on looks. Calipers from the brakes range are the top seller, followed by aero kits and front lips from the exterior range, where Pandem and Zerofighter both build for it.

For the B16A, headers, mid pipes and full systems from the exhaust range free up the top end, and lightened flywheels from the drivetrain range sharpen the response. Pedals for the cabin, uprated radiator caps, and bushes and collars from the handling range, which take the slack out of thirty-year-old wishbones, are the other regular orders. Spoon, HKS, Mugen and Toda are among the other makers owners choose.

Genuine parts

On an EG hatchback, rust in the rear quarter panels and the seams beside them is the classic buying concern, and repaired panels are worth asking about. The camshafts are belt-driven, so ask for dated proof of the last belt change. On an SiR II, check that a viscous differential fitted from the factory still works.

Wheels
