The DC5 Integra Type R

The DC5 Integra went on sale in Japan on 2 July 2001 as a three-door coupe only, with the Type R developed alongside it from the start, and it was built until 2006. It moved the Type R to the 2.0-litre K20A, an i-VTEC four with a timing chain in place of the B18C's belt, rated at 220 PS at 8,000 rpm and 206 Nm at 7,000 rpm. A close-ratio six-speed manual and a helical limited-slip differential drive the front wheels.

The chassis changed too. MacPherson struts replaced the double wishbones at the front, with double wishbones kept at the rear, and the Type R has Brembo four-piston front calipers on 300 mm discs. Recaro seats came as standard, and the car weighs 1,170 kg. The facelift of September 2004 brought new bumpers and lights and retuned suspension bushes.

What DC5 owners upgrade

LSD upgrade kits from the drivetrain range are the DC5's top seller. The factory helical differential relies on the grip of the lighter-loaded wheel, so it lets go when an inside front wheel goes light out of a slow corner, and a clutch-type unit from OS Giken or Cusco keeps the drive. Pads and calipers from the brakes range and electronics follow.

Shift knobs and steering boss kits from the interior range are popular, and for the K20A owners buy headers, catalytic converters and induction boxes, with stiffer engine mounts to steady it. Spoon, Mugen, HKS, Toda and J's Racing are among the other names DC5 owners choose.

Genuine parts

Ageing DC5s are prone to perished engine mounts. A sloppy gear change is often worn selector bushes rather than a tired gearbox. Rust is worth checking for everywhere, the underside especially, and water in the boot means the rear light seals need replacing. A faulty oxygen sensor is a common cause of a warning light, and the Recaro bolsters wear.

Wheels

The DC5 Type R came on 17x7 +60 wheels with 215/45R17 tyres, on a 5x114.3 bolt pattern with M12 x 1.5 nuts. Larger sizes are under wheels that fit the DC5.
