The BP5 Legacy Touring Wagon

The fourth Legacy Touring Wagon went on sale on 23 May 2003 and, with the B4 sedan, was voted Car of the Year Japan for 2003-2004, Subaru's first win. It was built until May 2009. The body grew to 1,730 mm wide, with an aluminium bonnet and tailgate to save weight, and every BP5 has full-time four-wheel drive.

The 2.0GT ended the sequential twin-turbo era. Its EJ20 has a single twin-scroll turbo, dual AVCS variable valve timing and equal-length exhaust headers, and makes 343 Nm from 2,400 rpm, far lower than the twin-turbo engines did. Power is 280 PS with the five-speed manual and 260 PS with the five-speed automatic. The naturally aspirated 2.0R revs to make 190 PS as a manual, and the 2.0i has a single-cam EJ20. The May 2006 facelift brought new bumpers, headlights, front wings, grille and rear lights, and SI-Drive on the 2.0GT; later 2.0GT spec.B cars have a six-speed manual.

What BP5 owners upgrade

BP5 owners spend first on how the car sits and feels. Lowering springs lead the handling range, steering wheels and shift knobs the interior range, and front lip spoilers the exterior range, with tie rod ends and brake pads close behind.

Maintenance makes up the rest: alternators, timing belts from the engine range, radiator caps, replacement air filters and clutch kits from the drivetrain range. STI, HKS, DAMD, Project Mu, Cusco and Carbing are among the names owners choose; STI is Subaru's own motorsport arm.

Genuine parts

The 2006 facelift changed most of the front and the rear lights, so bumpers, grilles, headlights, front wings and tail lights depend on whether a car was built before or after May 2006. The twin-scroll EJ20 still drives its camshafts with a toothed belt, and a belt that skips lets valves meet pistons, so a car with no belt history needs one.
