The Evo II

The Evo I was quick in a straight line and reluctant to turn, and the Lancer Evolution II of January 1994 set out to fix that. The wheelbase grew by 10 mm, the track was widened, the front lower arms became stronger forged parts and the body was stiffened. Tyres went up from 195/55R15 to 205/60R15, partly so rally cars could run larger rubber, and first and second gears were made lower.

Revised intake and exhaust took the 4G63 to 260 PS, with torque unchanged at 309 Nm, through a five-speed manual and full-time four-wheel drive. The new chassis code is CE9A, shared with the Evo III, and the II's name sits on the underside of its rear spoiler. In the World Rally Championship it gave the Evolution its first win, the 1995 Swedish Rally.

What Evo II owners upgrade

The engine takes the largest share: Tomei stroker kits, valvetrain parts, pulleys and timing belts for the engine, and Bee R rev limiters among the electronics. Replacement filters and pod filters for the intake and full exhaust systems follow.

The Evo II was the handling Evo, and its owners spend on keeping it that way: suspension kits from KYB and Cusco, engine mounts, and clutch kits once the power goes up. HKS, Bride, OS Giken, Fujitsubo and Kansai Service are among the makers they choose.

Genuine parts

The parts that made the II better are the ones to look after. The forged front lower arms and their bushes carry the car's sharper steering, and the GSR's rear limited-slip differential is a mechanical plate type, unlike the Evo I's viscous unit, so it takes its own parts. Ask what is actually fitted before ordering. A thirty-year-old 4G63 also wants its cambelt, balance shaft belt and tensioner on record.
