The Lancer Evolution IV arrived in August 1996 on the new CN9A body, the first Evo built on the fifth-generation Lancer. Mitsubishi turned the 4G63 around in the engine bay, mounting it the opposite way to the Evo III, and gave it a twin-scroll turbocharger, forged pistons and revised cams. Output reached 280 PS, the limit Japanese makers had agreed among themselves at the time.
The GSR introduced Active Yaw Control (AYC), a rear differential that shifts drive between the rear wheels under electronic control to sharpen turn-in and steady the car under braking. The RS, the stripped competition grade, used mechanical limited-slip differentials instead. At 1,690 mm wide, the Evo IV is the last Evo inside Japan's compact-car width; every later one is wider.
Most of the work on these cars is in the engine and driveline. On the engine, that means stroker kits and timing belts, Tomei's 2.2-litre 4G63 kit among them, and exhaust manifolds, heat shields and full systems from HKS and Kakimoto Racing. Behind the engine come clutch kits and limited-slip differentials from Exedy, ATS and Cusco.
In electronics, Bee R rev limiters are the usual choice, and Cusco strut braces and intercooler kits round out the list.
On a GSR, AYC is the system to check first. A faulty AYC pump is a familiar repair on AYC-equipped Evos, and the AYC fluid needs changing on schedule, so look for both in the service history, along with the cambelt.
Evo IV owners restoring the chassis order suspension and driveline genuine Mitsubishi parts: front lower arms and knuckles, front driveshafts, rear brake calipers, power steering gear and a rear bumper face kit.
The Evo IV uses a 5x114.3 bolt pattern with M12 x 1.5 nuts. The GSR left the factory on 16x6.5 +46 wheels with 205/50R16 tyres and the RS on 15x6 +46; see wheels that fit the Evo IV for what clears its narrower fenders.
