The ST205 Celica GT-Four

The ST205 was the last Celica GT-Four, and the car Toyota built to homologate its World Rally Championship Celica. It went on sale in Japan in February 1994 as a three-door liftback and was built until 1999; the Celica that followed had no four-wheel-drive version.

Its 3S-GTE is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four with a twin-entry CT20B turbo and a water-to-air intercooler, rated at 255 PS and 304 Nm in Japanese form. A five-speed manual drives all four wheels through a viscous-coupled centre differential and a Torsen rear differential, and the front suspension is Toyota's Super Strut. The GT-Four WRC, 2,100 of which were sold in Japan, adds a water spray for the intercooler, a bonnet spoiler and a taller rear wing, which became standard in December 1997. The works car's career ended in 1995, when Toyota was banned for a year over a turbo restrictor bypass.

What GT-Four owners upgrade

Engine electronics lead the list. On the handling side, KYB suspension kits are the most common buy, often with a strut brace, which suits a Super Strut front end now decades old. Replacement and pod filters for the intake, oil filters from the oil and fuel range and timing belts keep the 3S-GTE serviced.

Seat rails for bucket seats and steering boss kits from the interior range, and full exhaust systems, are the other regular buys. Bee R, KYB, APEXi, HKS, TRD, Recaro and Laile are among the names GT-Four owners choose.

Genuine parts

The water-to-air intercooler has its own coolant circuit and pump: check that it is full and actually circulating, and expect the radiator to crack and leak with age. Noises from the front end often mean worn figure-eight camber control links, a part particular to the Super Strut design, and the 3S-GTE's cambelt is due every five years.
