About the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII CT9A

The Evo VIII

The Lancer Evolution VIII went on sale in Japan on 31 January 2003, on the Evo VII's CT9A body with a new front carrying the Mitsubishi emblem at the centre of the grille. Underneath, Super AYC replaced the bevel-gear AYC differential with a planetary-gear unit that can transfer more torque between the rear wheels, reducing understeer and steadying the car through corners.

The GSR gained a newly developed six-speed manual; the RS came with either the six-speed or a close-ratio five-speed. Output stays at 280 PS, and torque rises to 40.0 kgm. The Evo VIII MR of February 2004 cut weight with an aluminium roof and fitted Bilstein dampers.

What Evo VIII owners upgrade

Evo VIII owners buy across the car: electronics such as Bee R rev limiters, and clutch kits from ORC, ATS and Cusco. Exhaust work is spread across manifolds, heat shields and full systems from HKS, Tomei and APEXi.

Voltex aero kits, brake pads, Tomei stroker kits and timing belts and replacement air filters complete the regular orders.

Genuine parts

Super AYC and ACD carry the Evo VIII's handling, so check both before anything else. With the ignition on, all three ACD mode lights should come on and then leave one lit; all three staying on means an AYC or ACD fault. Ask for AYC fluid changes and the cambelt in the service history. Rear arch rust is less common on the VIII than on some VIIs, but still worth a look.

Fuel system and bumper parts feature in Evo VIII owners' genuine Mitsubishi parts orders: fuel hoses and clamps, the engine rear roll stopper bracket, an exhaust manifold cover, front bumper reinforcement, the rear spoiler and a wiper arm.

Wheels

The Evo VIII uses a 5x114.3 bolt pattern with M12 x 1.5 nuts. The GSR and MR came on 17x8 +38 wheels with 235/45R17 tyres, the same front and rear, and the RS on 15x6 +46 steel wheels; see wheels that fit the Evo VIII for larger sizes.
