About the Nissan 180SX RS13

The 180SX

The 180SX is the three-door hatchback built on the S13 Silvia's platform, with retractable pop-up headlights and a liftgate. Nissan built it from March 1989 to December 1998, so it outlived the S13 Silvia and was sold alongside the S14.

The name comes from its first engine, the 1.8-litre CA18DET turbo at 175 PS; those cars are chassis RS13. From January 1991 the 180SX took the 2.0-litre SR20DET at 205 PS and became the RPS13, keeping its name. HICAS cars add a K to the code. Grades were renamed Type R and Type X in 1994, and from 1996 the Type S brought the first naturally aspirated 180SX, with the SR20DE.

What 180SX owners upgrade

The 180SX is a light, simple turbo coupe, and most money goes into the drivetrain first: an LSD upgrade kit and a clutch kit that will hold the power.

On the SR20DET, camshafts and stroker kits go inside the engine, while straight pipes, dump pipes and full systems take care of the exhaust and a larger intercooler handles the extra boost.

The cabin and body get as much attention as the engine. Steering boss kits and quick releases, seat rails for bucket seats and rear wings and spoilers are regular buys. Nismo, Tomei, HKS, APEXi, GReddy, Bride, ORC, Cusco and Works Bell are among the makers 180SX owners choose.

Genuine parts

Ordering by chassis code matters on a 180SX: an RS13 with the CA18DET and an RPS13 with the SR20DET take different engine parts, and the hatchback body, pop-up headlights and rear lights are its own, not the Silvia's.

On a car built up to 1998, radiators, engine mounts, wiring harnesses, air ducts and interior trim are typical age-related replacements, available as genuine Nissan OEM parts.

Wheels

The 180SX has four studs on a 114.3 mm PCD with M12 x 1.25 nuts, and came on 15x6 +45 wheels all round, on 195/60R15 or 205/60R15 tyres. Larger sizes are listed under wheels that fit the 180SX.
