The R33 Skyline GTS25t

The ninth-generation Skyline went on sale in August 1993, and the ECR33 GTS25t, the GTS-t to most owners outside Japan, was its turbocharged rear-wheel-drive model. The R33 replaced the R32 GTS-t's 2.0-litre RB20DET with the 2.5-litre RB25DET, a single-turbo straight-six with variable intake cam timing (NVCS) and 250 PS. A five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic drives the rear wheels.

HICAS rear steering was standard on every GTS25t except the Type G. A viscous limited-slip differential was standard, with an active LSD available instead. The Series 2 engine changed the ignition to coil packs with built-in ignitors, with a new airflow meter, ECU, cam angle sensor and throttle position sensor.

What R33 GTS-t owners upgrade

Owners often start with engine electronics and boost control, then a pod filter, surge tank and intercooler from the intake and cooling ranges, and straight pipes or a high-flow catalytic converter from the exhaust range. Turbo kits follow once the standard turbo has given what it can.

With a viscous LSD as standard, a mechanical LSD upgrade kit is a common change, often fitted with a stronger clutch from the drivetrain range. Pads and rotors from Project Mu and DIXCEL, and seat rails for bucket seats, finish many builds. Nismo, GReddy, HKS, Tomei, Blitz, APEXi and Cusco all build for this car.

Genuine parts

The RB25DET has no significant design flaw, and its common faults are electrical. Failing ignition coils cause misfires, and cam angle sensors cause trouble from time to time and are usually best replaced. At around thirty years old, hoses, seals and wiring are worth checking too. Wheels
